Lifeboat Coxswain Refresher Training

Lifeboat Coxswain Refresher Training is a PT Samson Tiara certified refresher course designed for personnel who have previously completed lifeboat coxswain training and need to refresh the practical skills and knowledge required to operate a twin-fall Totally Enclosed Motor Propelled Survival Craft (TEMPSC) as coxswain during an offshore emergency abandonment.

The refresher focuses on the practical elements of the coxswain role that require periodic revalidation and cannot always be maintained to the required standard through offshore drills alone. These include inspecting and preparing the TEMPSC, executing the full twin-fall launch sequence, manoeuvring to a safe area, managing passengers, responding to man overboard situations, towing, and coordinating survivor disembarkation.

The lifeboat coxswain role remains one of the most safety-critical roles during an offshore abandonment. This refresher supports continued competence by revisiting the key actions required to launch and operate the survival craft safely under emergency conditions.

This course is intended for clients who require practical lifeboat coxswain refresher training but do not require OPITO certification. Personnel who require OPITO certification should enrol in the relevant OPITO-approved Offshore Lifeboat Coxswain Further Training programme.

Note: Twin-fall TEMPSC systems are suspended from two independent falls, requiring specific launch and control procedures distinct from single-fall lifeboat systems.

This course is suitable for personnel who have previously completed lifeboat coxswain training and who need to refresh their practical TEMPSC coxswain skills, including:

• Personnel designated as TEMPSC coxswains
• Backup lifeboat coxswains
• Emergency response team members assigned to survival craft duties
• OIM backup personnel
• Senior personnel involved in offshore emergency response
• Personnel who may be required to operate a survival craft in the absence of the primary coxswain
• Personnel who require practical lifeboat coxswain refresher training but do not require OPITO certification

The course is delivered through classroom review and practical exercises using a twin-fall Totally Enclosed Motor Propelled Survival Craft (TEMPSC).

Training focuses on practical refresher exercises covering TEMPSC inspection, pre-launch preparation, passenger boarding, launch sequence, manoeuvring, sea anchor use, man overboard response, towing, transfer preparation, and survivor disembarkation.

Upon successful completion of this refresher training, delegates should be able to refresh and demonstrate the practical skills and knowledge required to act as a lifeboat coxswain within the scope of the course.

Delegates will refresh knowledge and practical capability in:

• Understanding the correct use of the sea anchor.
• Maintaining the safety and well-being of TEMPSC passengers.
• Managing injured personnel and passengers in distress.
• Checking the external and internal integrity of the TEMPSC.
• Removing mechanical restraints to enable launch.
• Starting the TEMPSC engine using primary and secondary start systems.
• Boarding passengers safely and briefing the crew.
• Confirming the launch area is clear and obtaining permission to launch.
• Releasing the lowering and launching mechanism.
• Securing hatches and activating air and water spray protection systems.
• Clearing the installation on a determined course for a safe area.
• Manoeuvring the TEMPSC to a safe area.
• Pacing alongside a vessel for the transfer of personnel.
• Responding to man overboard situations.
• Towing another vessel and preparing to be towed.
• Coordinating survivor disembarkation to a rescue craft.

This is a PT Samson Tiara certified Lifeboat Coxswain Refresher Training course. It is not an OPITO-certified Offshore Lifeboat Coxswain Further Training course. Personnel who require OPITO certification should enrol in the relevant OPITO-approved programme.

Delegates should have previously completed lifeboat coxswain training and must provide a valid offshore medical certificate or equivalent medical fitness certification.

Unlike the OPITO-certified programme, this PT Samson Tiara certified course does not require delegates to hold an OPITO BOSIET, T-BOSIET, FOET, T-FOET, T-HUET, or OPITO Offshore Lifeboat Coxswain certificate as a prerequisite, unless required by the client or duty holder.

Delegates must successfully complete the course based on the required performance standards in order to receive certification.

Delegates who successfully complete the course and meet the required performance standards will receive:

• PT Samson Tiara Lifeboat Coxswain Refresher Training certificate.
• Laminated wallet course qualification card.
