Using Drones To Aid In Firefighting

Drones can play an important role in speeding up the sizing up of the fire in industry, commercial, and even house fires. In commercial buildings and industrial complexes, a Drone can fly around the burning object, but it is a building or a vessel, and give the operator a good idea of the size of the fire and the temperatures they are facing.

In many cases, Drones can be an invaluable resource when dealing with fire. In the Oil And Gas Industry, when fitted with an infrared camera, they can be especially helpful in dealing with:

  • Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) fires
  • Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) fires
  • Natural Gas leaks

Drones And Fire

Drones can play an important role in speeding up the sizing up of the fire in industry, commercial, and even house fires. In commercial buildings and industrial complexes, a Drone can fly around the burning object, but it is a building or a vessel, and give the operator a good idea of the size of the fire and the temperatures they are facing. This can happen much faster and more accurately than a manual size-up. With this information, the PIC can more accurately determine how much equipment is needed, how many fire streams and water volumes are necessary, how many personnel need to be available, and the best way to attack the fire.

During the fire fighting operations, Supervisory Personnel can monitor the situation with a Drone. The information can be relayed back to a Command And Control Center in real-time, enabling them to monitor the effectiveness of the attack, see any secondary fires that might break out, and monitor personnel that is assisting with the operation. This information is also available to the On-Scene PIC so decisions can be made in real-time.

Information is both Infrared and Hi-Res Video Feeds. These video streams can be viewed separately or can be overlayed to help determine the safety and effectiveness of the operations.

Larger Drones or UAVs can also be used to deliver fire extinguishing agents, including Wet Water, Foam, Fire Extinguisher Balls, etc., to areas that Fire Fighters cannot access. While this will not replace personnel on the ground, it can make operations safer and faster.

Recent Tests By Samson Tiara And Halo Robotics

Halo Robotics and Samson Tiara teamed up recently to test the effectiveness of the DJI Matrice 30 Thermal Drone.

Several fires were used, including:

  • LPG Fire
  • Crude Oil Tank Fire
  • Building Interior Fire

All procedures were coordinated through DJI FlightHub 2 Software installed in the Control Room located at the Samson Tiara Cilegon Training Center / Testing Ground. The Control Team in the Control Center was able to pick the seat of the fire, give attach information to the Fire Team on the ground, and was able to pick up a secondary fire that broke out in another part of the fire prop and notify the Fire Team on the ground of its location.
