Introduction

Personnel who regularly travel to offshore installations by boat must maintain competence in vessel transfer procedures, emergency response arrangements, abandonment procedures, and sea survival techniques.

The OPITO Travel Safely by Boat (TSbB) Further Training programme refreshes and revalidates the knowledge and practical skills required to travel safely by boat within offshore operations. The programme reinforces safe transfer practices and emergency response actions while providing participants with an opportunity to refresh key practical survival skills.

This training is designed for personnel who already hold a valid OPITO TSbB certificate and require revalidation of their competence in safe boat travel, transfer procedures, emergency response, and sea survival.

This programme refreshes and revalidates safe boat travel competence for personnel travelling between vessels and offshore installations.

The training revisits safe embarkation and disembarkation procedures, personnel transfer methods, swing rope operations, transfer basket awareness, boat emergency procedures, abandonment procedures, life-saving equipment, and sea survival techniques.

Practical exercises reinforce transfer skills, emergency response actions, life raft boarding, and in-water survival techniques under controlled conditions.

Upon successful completion of the training, participants should be able to:

  • demonstrate continued competence in safe boat transfer procedures
  • identify hazards associated with personnel transfers
  • apply safe swing rope transfer techniques
  • explain boat emergency procedures and abandonment arrangements
  • demonstrate correct use of flotation devices
  • board a marine liferaft from the water
  • carry out initial post-abandonment actions
  • demonstrate individual and group sea survival techniques
  • respond appropriately to offshore boat emergencies

Travel Safely by Boat Further Training

This unit refreshes and revalidates the safe boat travel competence of personnel who have previously completed Travel Safely by Boat Initial Training. Theoretical learning revisits pre-boarding, boarding, and disembarkation procedures, safe personnel transfer procedures, including swing rope and transfer basket operations, hazards associated with boat fenders and vessel-to-platform distances, and the correct response to boat emergencies, including abandonment procedures and use of emergency equipment on board.

Practical exercises include:

  • Swing rope integrity check (sharp pull to confirm rope integrity) and correct luggage transfer technique
  • Swing rope transfer in both directions, holding own weight and swinging when ready, using both hands correctly
  • Donning an appropriate flotation device as used during transfers
  • Water entry (stepping off poolside from maximum 1m height) with correct precautions
  • Boarding a marine liferaft from the water
  • Carrying out initial liferaft actions (mooring lines, sea anchor, raft maintenance) and secondary actions (lookouts, radio beacons, first aid equipment)
  • Individual in-water survival techniques (swimming, HELP, wave slap protection) and group survival techniques (towing, chain, huddle, circle)
  • Participants must hold a valid OPITO-approved Travel Safely by Boat (TSbB) certificate.
  • Due to the physically demanding nature of practical exercises, participants must satisfy medical fitness requirements before participating in practical training activities.
